The Battle at the Breakfast Nook
His opening assault
No one to blame when dust had cleared,
It had all been his fault

He stared at her for quite a while
With obvious disdain
Struggling to put into words
What was wracking his brain

"You've got it pretty good here, dear
a very decent life
Better by far than if you'd been
somebody else's wife."

"I feed you from my table, dear
I shield you with my roof.
Yet when it's time to share my bed
You're distant and aloof."

"I think it's from that trash you read,"
He pointed to a book
A trashy romance novel on
the corner of the nook

"All day I ride a fucking desk
in drab, fluorescent hell.
All day you read this romance crap
All day you sit and dwell

On how your life would suddenly
be free of boredom when
Fabio sweeps you in his arms
And has you in the den."

"I wish you wouldn't read that shit,
remove it from my sight!"
He shoved the book from off the nook
onto the floor in spite.

She came and stooped and picked it up
Unbent the corner's bend
Paused long enough to take a breath
and think deep thoughts, and then

Unleashed a salvo, quite unlike
Gil Cross had ever heard
Emenate from his quiet wife
Who hardly spoke a word.

"You don't know how to touch me, Gil."
She finally replied
"In 19 years of sweat and tears
I've not been satisfied."

He opened up his mouth to speak
She stopped him right away
continuing to speak her mind;
say what she had to say.

"You don't appreciate me, Gil.
You never really did."
"I'm just a fucking trophy, Gil.
Someone to raise your kid."

He looked at her with glassy eyes
Unable to reply
In 19 years of sweat and tears,
he'd never seen this side

of his dear wife, diminuitive
and quiet and reserved
An anger stirred in Gil's heart then
"Where do you get the nerve

To talk to me this way, you whore?"
he finally shot back
"I'm plenty fucking passionate
It's you who has a lack

Of feeling when the lights are out
You usually play dead."
"Our honeymoon was the last time
you even gave me head."

"My dearest husband, it is I
who is unsatisfied."
"The first night of our honeymoon
I sat alone and cried

Out on the beach at the hotel
While you played Baccarat."
"I cursed myself for wedding you
I cursed your name and spat."

"That's only what you think I did."
He said with a sly smile
"That night all of those years ago
I spent quite a long while

With a young girl I met that night.
What do you think of that?
Think of it, I was with her while
You 'cursed my name and spat.'"

"I spoiled her with lavish gifts
far more than she was due."
"I gave her the attention that
I wouldn't spend on you."

Gil sat back at the breakfast nook
Convinced that he had won
He'd beaten her, the loveless hag
The mother of his son

"I didn't sit and spit all night."
It was her turn to smile
"I met a man upon the beach
who sat with me a while."

"I told him of your clammy hands
your groping, horrid touch."
"The thought of THAT 'til death we part
Was really just too much."

"He took me to his hotel room
and gave me a massage."
"His touch was just as soft as silk
fleeting as a mirage"

"I read these novels to remind me
of Alcapulco bay."
"The night a man made love to me
and told me not to stay

With you another second, dear
He told me I should run
But I did leave that man that night
The father of my son."

She looked him in the eyes and watched
His face as her words hit
"And now if you'll excuse me,
I must leave with half your shit."

She went into the other room
And calmly packed a case
He hit the den, hit the booze
the wall, seeing her face.

The Battle of the Breakfast Nook
Did not need to occur
He lost the battle, lost the house
Ultimately lost her

He thought she'd drop in on her Mom
Not knowing she would run
Back to Acapulco bay;
the father of her son

We can't just choose to be content
Though it's what we should choose
For when you think you stand to gain
You have the most to lose

The Battle at the Breakfast Nook
Her first and last assault
The 19 years of hidden tears
It had all been his fault

Marge: Homer, remember you promised you'd try to limit pork to six
servings a week?

Homer: Marge, I'm only human.
