Gaudi is one of the coolest architects this world has ever known. Forget your Frank Lloyd Wrights and Charles Rennie MacKintoshs', Gaudi was the bollocks when it comes to making excellent buildings.

He was born in 1852 to a coppersmith and studied at the Escola Superior d'Arquitectura in Barcelona. His style was a bizarre Gothic mix-up of fairly epic proportions. He was highly regarded by other avant-garde artists, mainly for his challenges to the established and accepted visual order of things.

I've seen probably his most impressive work, the Sagrada Familia, in Barcelona, which is a faintly ridiculous church. Still unfinished is is undoubtedly one of the most imposing structures I've ever seen; at the same time, however, it is one of the most beautiful. It is also the closest I've come to shitting myself in public as at the highest point that thing is fucking high.

Oh, and I missed off one of his things, Park Guell, mainly because I couldn't find any decent photo's, but it's cool too. Sorry Gaudi.

Those pictures of the Sagrada Familia don't have anything on the real thing. When I finally got to the top of all those stairs I was dizzy from the height and its grandeur. The view lets you see from the mountains of Barcelona to the Mediterranean, maybe I'll post some of my own pictures sometime...

What in fucks name is a wine cooler. I know I've asked on here before.
-------------------

A wine cooler is a fruity alcoholic beverage. They come in flavors like kiwi-strawberry and they're not really "wine" at all. If you've heard of Boone's Farm, that's sort of like a wine cooler.

Fucking cool post BTW.

funny that you didn't mention the contacts he had with Salvador Dali, they influenced
eachother seriously..

=====================

I considered that, but this wasn't really supposed to be about his life/influences or whatever, just about what he made and how kick ass it looks.

Ahh my favourite architect. Am driving through Barcelona (from Madrid) in June actually so I'll get to see it again.

Incidently, there was a song written about Antonio Gaudi. And it was called 'La Sagrada Familiar'.
Superb piece and by an AMAZING band called The Alan Parsons Project.

I'll give a tenner to anyone here who owns one of his albums.

Probably.

I own some of his albums... Eve, could that be one ?

They're all in Barcelona. In fact, here's a map.

Tell me about it, and photo's don't even do them justice. The textures are amazing, as are the views both from the top of buildings as well as internally.

I sang that shit in choir when I was a kid. No, I'm not gay.
-----------------------------------------------------------

I can empathize. Had to play that piece and other selections from "Carmina Burana" in marching band my junior year of high school (god, I can't believe that was 13+ years ago). At least my band director got wiser for senior year and picked the far more interesting "Lord of the Rings" symphonic music.

O Fortuna,
velut Luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem;
egestatem,
potestatem,
dissolvit ut glaciem.

Sors immanis
et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus
semper dissolubilis;
obumbrata
et velata
mihi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.

Sors salutis
et virtutis
mihi nunc contraria;
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.
hac in hora
sine mora
cordae pulsum tangite!
quod per sortem
sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite!
