"I suck the fluid from the spinal cords of my lovers," she beams.
"It keeps me young," and she has no teeth
And her hair is as grey as the scum on top of my coffee.
I can drink it if I don't think about it.
And her cat in one moment arches its back
And bares its teeth at me smiling
And in the next is asleep and I'd tell her
But I think she knows and I think
It knows too.
There is a knitted afghan over her lap
But her kitchen smells of piss and I
Am too polite to say anything
But I think it might be my coffee that smells that way.
I'd ask the cat but he already knows too much.
Yes, she says, and I see her greypink tiny gums
She'd like me to comb her hair because
Lovers are few and far between
And the fluid from transients isn't the same
She pushes the cat off her lap and
I grab the afghan before it can fall
And allow whatever lives underneath to escape
And she smiles knowingly
And so does the cat
Her hair is soft like wisps of nothing
She can't reach to wash it anymore
So it's yellow with the cigarettes she smokes
And eats.
I'm not going to finish my coffee.
