It appears that there was a very good chance Barack Obama could become the next President of the United States, but his stance on drilling for oil may cost him this election. This is not an endorsement or a condemnation of Obama, I'm just pointing out how history can turn on a dime. A few months ago it looked like Obama could reach the White House, running a solid campaign that appealed to anyone who wasn't old, white, or rich (in other words, most of America), and even gathering some of THEM as well, but Obama has made a spectacular fumble when it comes to the exploitation of America's natural oil resources.
As times get tougher and the rising price of oil impacts almost every aspect of our lives, politicians are finally seeing the light and admitting that we SHOULD start drilling in the US and off our shores. Yes, we should make every effort to keep the environment green and make a transition to a lifestyle and economy that is less dependent on oil, but that transition will not happen overnight. In the meantime, a lot of people are feeling the crunch.
Obama can talk about change all he wants, but when people are having a hard time affording gas to get to work or seeing food prices escalate or getting laid off (62,000 American jobs were lost last month) they want the people in charge to take charge and turn things around... and let's not forget winter is coming and a lot of people will see huge bills for heating their homes. When times are hard, humanitarian change can wait. It's human nature. Food, shelter, and sex are imperatives (not necessarily ranked in that order for everyone), and change for the betterment of society can sit on the back burner until things get better.
Obama is flat out opposed to drilling anywhere in America or offshore. John McCain has recently stated is should be decided on a state-by-state basis.
We may have as many as two trillion barrels of shale oil. There was a time when collecting that oil was not economically viable, but Canada has been exploiting the Tar Sands for decades. There may be as many as 90 billion barrels of oil of American shores. In the ANWAR (in Alaska and off Alaskan shores) there may be ten billion barrels. This oil will not last forever and it is not intended to, but it could see us through to a transition to something else. Perhaps until the majority of the population with a bug up their collective ass about nuclear power will finally realize it is safe and efficient and manageable, the French have been using nuclear reactors safely for many years, and we should be doing the same, but we need to take care of the here and now, and until Obama changes his stance on drilling, he will never become President.

I hope the oil runs out next week and jumps to $100 a gallon in the mean time.
America's too fucked up to survive much longer anyway, I'd rather go out in an apocalyptic fuckfest that teaches the rest of the world the importance of alternative energy. Maybe the species will make it to 3008 that way.

I realize it would take a while for any drilling begun now to have an impact, but I notice you suggested no energy alternatives, because there are none. 2030 is only two decades away. Do you think we could substitute our oil reliance with another energy source in two decades? Solar, hydro, wind or wave power? Nuclear? Not likely, and like it or not we are stuck with oil for decades to come"""
i guess you didn't read the part where i said that even if you drilled everywhere in the US, the price today would change only a little. now imagine that with demands in 2030. it won't change anything. but people are dumb fucks and assume that since it's US oil it goes directly it will go directly into their fuel tank.
People don't get the fact that you could have a shit ton of electric cars on the roads in a few years but we will still be charging those cars primarily from sources that pollute."""
I didn't know we were talking about pollution now. We're talking about gas price and last i checked fossil fuel powerplants run for the majority on coal, not oil.
And if you don't think this will be a factor in the election you haven't been watching the news closely. """
It's a factor because dumb fucks spin it like drilling offshore and in ANWAR matters. obviously, it works because gullible idiots like yourself believe it and make posts about how we must drill our way out of this, even though your own departement of energy says it's irrelevant.

Most of the strongest points have already been made below, but I want to point out you misstated Obama's position. He is opposed to drilling in ANWAR (same as McCain, who still opposes this), and to ending the ban on offshore drilling that has been in place since the 70's. However, in Obama's America, you could do other land-based drilling, get tar sands and shale oil until the cows come home. Also, you graphic suggests he is opposed to nuclear power, whereas he in fact describes himself as "agnostic" on the topic. However, he is opposed to the Yucca Mountain waste storage facility.
I like your fiction, but you can't get your facts straight on the political stuff.

What he fuck are you talking about? Racist? I pointed out that the MINORITY of his supporters are older, rich white people who traditionally vote GOP to see their assets protected. How the fuck is that racist? Did I use any pejoratives?

had you made the point that people are in denial and ready to vote for anything that they HOPE will lower energy costs, even if it was legislation to implore unicorns to fill up their tanks for free, your shitty post would've sense.
but the U.S. department of energy already said that drilling wouldn't have any impact until like 2030 so whether you drill or not is not pertinent in this election. even moreso that assuming americans drilled offshore and in ANWAR, the price of oil is still fluctuating on international markets. the fact that it's 'american oil' doesn't make any difference, unless you nationalized the whole thing, Hugo. so that means that with projected world wide demands, or even with today's numbers, opening up those sites would be an insignificant drop in a barrel.
--
This was not a thesis, so I didn't cover everything. Your point about "HOPE" is absolutely correct. This is just a starting point for discussion.
I realize it would take a while for any drilling begun now to have an impact, but I notice you suggested no energy alternatives, because there are none. 2030 is only two decades away. When I was in the Navy I once had a conversation with a local girl in Alameda (across the bay from San Francisco) who said she was glad there were no nuclear power plants in the area because they were so dangerous. At the time, the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise with it's eight nuclear reactors was tied up on one side of a pier at the Naval Base in Alameda, and the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson was on the other side of the same pier with it's two bigass reactors, less than two miles from and in sight of the park in which the conversation was held. I smiled. If she only knew.

Drilling for oil in ANWAR or offshore is merely rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. It is short-sighted and does nothing to address that we need to wean ourselves from oil. Period.

jack ...
this was the most useless tirade yet. Normally I will read what you have to say all the way through but this... this was shit dude.
the fact of the matter is Oil prices are being kept artificially high, thanks to the GOP.
Drilling isn't going to be a quick fix to our energy needs. We wouldn't feel relief at the pump for over a decade.
10+ years. nice hot button issue you have there.
Try looking at pebble bed reactors before you make you assumption the nuclear power is oh so bad.
I could go off on my conspiracy theories, but I really don't have the energy at the moment.

Hauling all the oil in America up out of the ground won't drop the price of gasoline one bit. None. Ever notice that the rumor of a hurricane in the Gulf sends gas prices through the roof? Our refineries are so jammed together in an area that is almost guaranteed to bring damage from weather that we couldn't do anything WITH the oil.
Except sell it to China. Which wouldn't help the price of gas here.

Sorry, but Caulaincourt is correct. To explore with 3D seismic, drill exploratory wells, then drill developement wells around any proven (not tangible reserves), would take at least 10-15 years down the road.
Even today we are presently drilling in the immense Bakken formation of N Dakota, Montana, and Saskatchewan (estimated @ minimally 4 billion barrels...that's fucking huge), those deposits will not provide fruition for years down the road.
