There's a rhythm to it. It's graceful, it's elegant: a snap to the wrist and the line flicks long and lithe out over the water, settling for a instant before - snick! - it's back again, lure flicker-flashing through the air before sent back out again. It's repetitive, but not the sort of same-again motion that binds you to a void of thoughtlessness.

It's the kind of same-again motion that unlocks your mind, that abandons any bindings! that allows your thoughts to twirl and lift and dance together. And, despite all that, there's still that sweet stillness of self, ever present and -

C'n't be t'only thing t'make ye feel like that, what? Fishin'?

The memory, the silver-thin strand of it that was tugged and unravelled inside the boy's own mind, vanished with a whispery, burbling trickle of water, a splash and flop as of a fish falling back into the water.

The boy sighed and sat back, lacing his fingers across his knees, and gazed out over the lake, gently rippling from the spring breeze. He nodded, imperceptibly.

"It's not the same as out on the boats, but..." His voice trailed off and he suddenly pushed forward, scooping up a flat, round stone and sending it skipping out over the lake. And then sat back, and exhaled, slowly, his head dropping to his chest.

Awh, yer miss'n it, then?

The larger form - the winged one, the bronze one - nudged his angular head into the lad's shoulder, and were it not for the boy bracing himself, he might've well fallen over. There was a low, rumbling laugh; perhaps from dragon, perhaps from boy, but fading so quickly that swiftly thereafter there was nothing but the murmur and sigh of the gentle wind.

Here, then. 've got somethin' that might help, yeah? Watch. Watch!

And there's a rhythm to this, too. It's graceful, it's elegant: that low crouch to the ground, powerful muscle gliding under smoothed bronze hide, the ripple and bend of twisting ink stains. And - woosh! - there's a whirl of dust, and a great whisk of wings.

And it's repetitive, as the shape spirals higher, a snap of translucent sails against the air, again and again, but not the sort of same-again motion that binds to a void of thoughtlessness.

No, there's no recklessness here. It's deliberate, it's purposeful; there's a bright, brassy trumpet of ecstasy, a twist of slim body, a glint of fawn against the sun's light. Below, the boy surges to his feet, a triumphant shout ringing loud across the lake as he pumps one fist skyward.

The sensation is passed by single filament, a thin wisp of smoke leaking from one mind into the other - the wail of wind against triangular head, the siren lure of the sky compelling their shared self higher, and higher! And there's the even beat of wings - the kind of same-again motion that unlocks the mind, that abandons any bindings! that allows thoughts to twirl and lift and dance together.

And, through all that, there's still that sweet stillness of self, ever present - partaken by both, belonging to neither - as the shape coils back downward, the painful-pleasant ache of muscles yet-unaccustomed to use calling him back to earth.

There, now, the ring and twang of harp string and tambourine sings bright in the boy's mind, as the shape settles back next to him, how's that, then?

Last time i went fishing with a dragon he got drunk and started fights. This was far nicer.

It all happened at the beginning of that turbulent decade known as the
eighties. Those were idealistic days: the candidacy of John Anderson,
the rise of Supertramp. It was an exciting time to be young.
