The question of IF it is a word or not is a moot point. The real question should be, SHOULD it be a word.
Speaking of British vs. American english, I get a kick out of reading British academic journal articles. Once I was reading a British criminology journal article on sex offenses towards juveniles and I ran smack up against the word 'buggery.'
Now, I've heard Britishers use 'bugger' and 'buggery' in their everyday speech, but I never thought it was a proper word. I just accepted it as one of those 'Britsh things.'
The article cited a case study of a British paedophile (see, even used the British spelling) who had "committed numerous acts of buggery on juveniles."
I stopped reading at that point and went and showed my fellow American Uni students the article. We even had a discussion about British and American language differences and dared one another to start writing our papers using British english so we could see if our professors would mark us down on our papers.

So I saw the worst event ever, and I'm pretty sure I hate Europe (it had to be them) for inventing it. I have no idea what it was called, but it was a kind of mixture between basketball, European football, and hockey.
They ran around like idiots with a miniature soccer ball, dribbling every few steps (with their hands) around what looked like a three point line, and threw the ball into a net about the size of a hockey net.
Worse than rowboat racing.
