Went to Madeira
Perfect weather
Lovely people
Amazing scenery
Tropical with palm trees and mountains
A definite need for a new restaurant cooking French/English food
Oportunity to grow wonderful vegetables
Going back in June to look at buying a plot of land
And hopefully in three years time
we're MOVING.

You'd leave London for that?
Where's the smog, the knife crime and random vomit spots on public transport?

Ah. Is there a local seafood industry that can supply you with fresh catch? You'd mentioned growing vegetables. Looks like you'd have to have pretty much everything else flown in. Or do they have cows/sheep?
http://www.sunshineestates.net/reg_sum/madeira_islands.html Looks like you can get a nice apartment or still nice villa in the 150K€ range and some valley land to grow veggies on for 40K€ or so.

Its quite odd. All of the restaurants we saw had pretty much the same menu. And not only that - it was like someone gave them a menu in 1982 and they kept it the same all these years.
Example: Starters - french onion soup, prawn cocktail, bread and butter.
Mains - fillet steak with chips and thousand island dressing (?), garlic prawns...
All very nice but rather dated. Where is the pan fried sea bass on braised savoy cabbage and pancetta? Or the slow roasted lamb with capers, spinach and hasselback potatoes?

Looks lovely.
What defines a "need" for a particular cuisine? Is it simply that there aren't many of that ilk in the area, or is it the number of visitors to that area from a particular region?
Also: For some reason, the words "Watney's Red Barrel" are stuck in my head now.
