Kathy loved the kinks...not just loved, but a sick obsessive all consuming dedication.
I like the kinks, everyone likes the kinks right? I mean who cant help but like them. They are one of the greatest most original and influential bands of our time.
When you are coming up, it seems to be a right of passage to have a favorite band similar to having a favorite sports team I suppose. I was more of a sampler, and still am. I cant understand how someone can listen to one band when there are so many interesting sounds out there. Similarly, I don't understand why someone who loves baseball can just be interested in one team..and further more it blows my mind how someone who loves baseball can say that they hate the Yankees, a team that has historically produced some of the best ballplayers in history, a team that always makes September interesting.
So like I said, Kathy loved the Kinks. She would only have sex while the kinks played. She would stop in whatever degree of coition we were engaged in and set the needle back to a live version of Lola when she was ready to get her ya ya's out. It kind of freaked me out that she would pick that particular tune as the finale. But you know, I was getting tail and it was primo tail, and at 17 years old you NEED tail. She could have put the freakin Lawrence Welk singers on as far as I cared.
After we were done and I was taking off my stilettos and rolling off my nylons she would set the needle on destroyer and we would talk about- you guessed it, the kinks. One particular afternoon while we were talking and she was wiping off my makeup w/cold cream I told her that I had BSP to see TSOL and the circle jerks and asked her to go.
Now you have to understand that this was the early eighties during the fever pitch of the west coast punk scene and TSOL and the Circle Jerks were smoking fuckin hot. Me offering her a tag along with my backstage pass was almost like an engagement proposal. That offer would only go to a chick I was crazy about or my brother or Jesus that's it. I wouldn't have even offered that to my best friend.
She was not enthusiastic or excited in the least. In fact, she turned me down. I was in shock. We argued about how she was so narrow minded musically. She actually insulted the whole punk scene and in particular TSOL and the Circle Jerks. I knew better than to put down her precious Kinks, there was no telling what she would do. So I just drilled a hole in her head and made her my backstage zombie. The end.

Ray Davies is closest the to the photographer. If the earlier comment about it not looking like The Kinks wasn't one of your uber 'in jokes' that I didn't get.

how do you know Ray is closest to the photographer? you cant even see the photographer in this photo!
unless you were there when the picture was taken in the sixties...but I doubt that as the majority demographic of uber is twenty somethings.
plus what would the odds be if you were in fact present when this picture was taken,...20 to 1?

I SAW the kinks in sydney. they were well past their prime of course, but it was still a great concert. first big concert i ever went to.
it was a big adventure. i went up to sydney with two girls and we ended up staying in a hotel in kings cross (red light district)and getting incredibly stoned. for the second time in my life, i botched an opportunity for double trouble.
many years later i botched my third opportunity. so i'm batting at 0 and 3, or 3 and 0, or whatever you say.
heartbreaking really

I love The Kinks. "Schoolboys in Disgrace" is one of the best albums of all time.
This post is not one of the best of all time.
And I have no idea who that is a picture of, but it sure doesn't look like Ray Davies or any of The Kinks.
