haven't yet gotten around to reading any Orwell, but 1984 and Animal Farm are definitely on my list.
that sounds a lot like what Burroughs means, i think. my understanding is that he thinks because of the whole language system we're forced into very structured and specific methods of expression and there is so much more which simply cannot be expressed in words, grammar, etc.

ah, thats a concept orwell went over in 1984 with his idea of newspeak and the concept those in control manipulating the people through language. if they can only communicate and express themselves with a language which by its very nature doesnt allow them to say anything against the regieme, they can never revolt, because they cant express ideas that are contrary to the ideology of the state.

Well, the phrase "all speech is meaningless" is completely out of context in this piece. in the part of the inferno that this is in, Virgil is refering to Nimrod who is some titan spouting gibberish, i believe the line is "To him all speech is meaningless" or something to that effect. i don't think Dante was trying to make a statement.
as for Burroughs, he believed Language was a system of control and that we should break through, which is what much of the Nova Trilogy is about. different systems of control, language being on eof them.

ah well i was commenting on the title. shelley (probably influenced by dante) wrote in his defence of poetry about how language would stagnate without poets to create new words and redefine existing ones.
nietzsche(fuck i hate typing that) carried this further and said that all language is essentially metaphor and hence we can never say what we mean, ie that 'all speech is meaningless'...
i was mistaken.

Well he may have been I suppose, but my understanding of the "cut-up" method was that it was pioneered by Brion Gysin. Gysin introduced it to Burroughs who took interest in the idea and went further with it in the Nova Triology, Interzone, and Naked Lunch.
As for the title, that was just a phrase I cut out of Dante's Inferno and put it at the top. It seemed proper so I made it the title.

Oh and someone already mentioned "A Clockwork Orange", but aside from that and my local newspaper can anyone guess what other three sources I used.
I'll give you guys a hint, two of them are novels and one is an epic poem. Also, the skull pictures of from the cover of one of the novels.

Speech has been meaningless ever since Extreme.
Saying I love you
Is not the words I want to hear from you
It's not that I want you
Not to say, but if you only knew
How easy it would be to show me how you feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
Cos I'd already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you
More than words
Now I've tried to talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close don't ever let me go
More than words is all I ever needed you to show
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
Cos I'd already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you
More than words
